Starting at the age of 4, Captain Dan has been on the water; first on inland lakes in Wisconsin, than on Lake Michigan, and now the Atlantic Coast and Chesapeake Bay.
Here he grew up in the tradition of classic wooden run-a-bouts before the introduction of fiberglass construction. Dan raced Chicago to Mackinaw IOR, as well as ILYA on Melges scows, from 20’ M20s to 38’ A class Scows. For relaxation he shared ownership in a 26’ Bristol designed sloop that was transported from Lake Geneva, WI to Virginia Beach for enjoyment on the Chesapeake Bay.
After college Captain Dan was in charge of the 58’ Grand Banks Trawler “Scarlet Cloud” Tiburon, CA. As Captain, there were frequent voyages using Loran A and RDF to the Hawaiian Islands, Marina Del Ray and Catalina Island, and the Baja Peninsula to Cabo San Lucas.

this was followed by a trip on the 75’ schooner Cyrano from Fort Lauderdale to Curacao. Many islands in the Lesser and Greater Antilles were visited. It was while mating on this vessel that Dan added celestial navigation to his skills. Sail week in Antigua BVI was enjoyed sailing out of Sir Admiral Lord Nelsons’ marina after stopping over in Tortola and Virgin Gorda in the USVI. .
Dan lived aboard his own 36 cruiser in Miami and traveled the Florida Keys, Biscayne Bay, and the Bahamas. He has made numerous trips up and down the ICW. He now resides on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach.

Captain Dan runs a Charter Business in Virginia Beach, He runs off shore, big game hunting trips as well as luxury cruises with clients. He is an accomplished angler, and has tournament experience and success. |

Captain Dan Maher has operated 70 footers and larger in the course of his marine experience as a yacht and charter broker of large vessels.
While selling smaller boats to less experienced boaters, he initiated a training program at the dealership where he worked. Many coworkers became Safe Boating Instructors. The program remains in place today.
To assist those with larger boats who wanted the enjoyment of weekend or longer trips on the Chesapeake Bay, Dan organized and was the Founding Commodore of a Virginia Beach based yacht club.
The club has prospered and remains active today in the pursuit of boating knowledge, experience and kinship.
Dan provides transport services to vessel owners that need them moved north in the spring and south in the winter. He is available for a full time Captain position with the right owner and vessel.
Captain Dan is licensed United States Coast Guard, US Merchant Marine Officer #1134212. Dan is a Safe Boating Instructor as well as ASA Certified Sailing Instructor. and is available for private lessons. He currently provides custom training programs for the US Navy.
